Chicago Bound: DJ Ron Email Update – Friday, November 7th

Lots to talk about today..

RollerGirls Invade Nashville

You never know what’s going to happen.  Last Sunday, what started off as a Halloween weekend closer ended up being a massively explosive party.  The Music City RollerGirls hosted the WFTDA Roller Derby International Championships and they all came to Play for the closing “mingle.”  I knew it was going to be fun night because the Nashville team works out at Gym 5 and they are quite energetic (and full of personality). I started spinning early at 9pm, and by 9:30pm the dance floor was packed and stay packed all night long. The energy in the room was amazing and I was mixing in all kinds of requests and random fun stuff all night long.  The camaraderie and friendships of all the team members from around the world was so deep and unifying that it reminded me of the team at Play.  Throughout the night, I saw several employees, who weren’t even scheduled, pitch in and help out.  It really feels great to be part of such a great group of people who care so much about and support each other so strongly – kind of like all the RollerGirls from around the world.  One thing I learned though, never play “Blurred Lines” for a RollerDerby crowd <grin>.  Congratulations to the Division 1 Winners Gotham Girls (NYC) and the Division 2 Winners Detroit Derby Girls.

VideoTron – Tonight

Tonight (Friday) I am so excited to be spinning the VIDEOTRON party at Roscoe’s in Chicago! Fusion Radio is celebrating 5 years of bringing live music to Halsted with a special live performance by Erika Jayne.  I’ve seen Erika perform at the Summer Sessions, and she definitely puts on an energetic show with intense choreography and all the theatricality you want from a dance diva.  Recently topping the Club Chart for a seventh consecutive time with “PAINKILLR” (check out the new video here), you know that she has the hits to keep the boys moving. It will be a bit of a WMC flashback as I get to spin once again with Detroit’s own DJ DigiMark, one of the nation’s premier videoremixers and videoDJs. If you are in Chicago, you definitely want to be at Roscoe’s tonight. This event launches my new residency at Roscoe’s, for which I will be spinning every three months!
Fusion Radio

Speaking of Fusion Radio, last week we launched three new stations – Raveo (festival EDM), Jamz (hip-hop), and Alternative (modern rock, alternative).  These new channels join Fusion Dance, Fusion Pop, and Fusion Latin- giving the station a diverse feel to fit your every music mood.  If you haven’t already downloaded the Fusion App – go to Google Play or the iTunes App store and pick it up now.

Special thanks to the team at All Access Dance (Cary Vance and John Parker) for spotlighting me as Programmer of the Week!  I am so grateful for the recognition – All Access IS the bible for radio!  Click here to see my hot picks for the week!  (Inside joke to one of my favorite fellow bald eagles – this flush is for you.)

With such amazing DJs as Jane Dupree, DJ Remedy, and Phil, it is such an incredible honor to be a finalist in the DJ Category for Out and About Nashville Gay Faves. One of the many things that I love about ClubPlanet is that I am able to write about brand new talent as well as speak to iconic legends.  This week is a perfect example – Arthur Baker and Dyro.  Speaking to Arthur Baker during Amsterdam Dance Event was a once in a lifetime experience, which almost didn’t happen.  We were scheduled on Thursday but there were flight issues. I have to say that I was crushed because he was someone I was really looking forward to talk to.  On Friday, I saw him walking down the Keizersgracht, so I walked up to him and asked if he was free for a quick interview and he agreed to it. He has a reputation for speaking his mind (as you will read in the interview here), so I was a bit nervous at first but that quickly went away as we chatted about the upcoming 808 Documentary, his classics, and the recent Slam Dunk’d record that I play the hell out of.   Dyro is a rising star that should be on your radar.  I first met him back at ADE 2012 when I was one of the first people to ever interview him.  As with many young Dutch DJs, he was kind of shy and wasn’t completely sure of himself.  It’s amazing how much he has come into himself over the past two years.  Actually, considering the string of Beatport hits and rigorous tour schedule, it doesn’t come as that much of a surprise.  Watch out for his upcoming single “X” and co-headlining tour with Bassjackers (I hope they come to Nashville!). Mark Your Calendars

Two important events to mark on your calendar!  Support Radio Free Nashville the weekend of November 21st/22nd at the Legendary Kimbro’s Pickin’ Parlor for the Thank God It’s Radio Free Nashville – Benefit Weekender.  We are in the home stretch towards the new signal translator that will bring the station to all of Nashville!  Click here for more info.  Also, looking forward to February, save the date for Avant Garde Mad Hatters Ball benefitting Nashville CARES at the Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum.  Guess I need to start working on some sort of Swarovski-encrusted hat..

As always, I want to thank you for your support – it means more than you can imagine.
